Counseling and Rehabilitation

Back

Our goal is to facilitate clients assuming responsibility for heir own lives and recovery. The program is peer driven, with a heavy emphasis on group process. We train clients in assertiveness, conflict resolution, self-efficacy, and goal setting attainment. The clients are responsible for the housekeeping and some maintenance, and overseen by a "Steering Committee" which consists of a senior male and female resident who act as liaison between staff and clients. The UUADAC clinical staff members and The Haven staff conduct regular group therapy sessions at the residence. Not only in groups, but also in daily interchanges with staff, peers, educational didactics, and in community support, the residents are provided an atmosphere of support that will continue into the rest of their lives. The average length of stay for completion of our program is approximately 70 days. Prior to completion, each resident is required to prepare an acceptable "Aftercare Plan". That plan must include, among other things, weekly participation in outpatient therapy, working with a sponsor and regular participation in AA meetings. Those who do not complete treatment are encouraged to begin outpatient group therapy and attend AA meetings. Everyone is encouraged to participate in all activities as long as they are maintaining sobriety. A variety of recreational and cultural activities are provided. Recreation includes attendance at films, dramas sports, cultural events and camping, as well as several outings, which have included annual Lake Powell trips, Colorado and Snake River runs. Both residents and alumni are involved in these outings and residents are shown how to have a good time and enjoy life without drugs and alcohol through interaction with former clients whose lives are now free form such. The Haven residents also receive vocational assessment as well, along with services from the Utah Division of Rehabilitation services when needed. The Division of Alcohol and Drugs and the Salt Lake County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Administration also provide services to our clients.
