| Program Philosophy |
Alcoholism and drug dependence is a three-fold illness (physical, mental, and spiritual). To be successful, we feel that our program must address all of these aspects. At The Haven we provide clinical supervision, emotional and mental support, as well as spiritual insight and motivation. The constant contact and sharing with fellow patients cannot be over emphasized in its effectiveness. The Treatment model is that of a therapeutic community with a level of intensity, which qualifies it as an III.5 level of care according to American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. More easily stated, we are one step below being a full intensive inpatient care that also provides medical intervention. Our treatment is 12 Step oriented with a focus on clients assuming responsibility for their own recovery. We provide substance abuse treatment for adult men and women who are in need of long term care in a supportive structured environment. The Haven provides food, shelter, training, referral and support services for vocational / educational rehabilitation, physical and psychological evaluation, and recreational therapy. Potential residents must complete detoxification prior to interviewing for entry. Our program is designed to provide services to those that could benefit from more intensive or longer-term therapy than is offered through traditional inpatient settings, but do not require hospitalization or intensive medical attention. We often act as a strong bridge between hospitalization and full reintegration into the daily routine of family and work for those who require further therapeutic interventions after hospitalization. However, a great deal of our admissions are direct. We treat our residents with the utmost care and compassion and provide a firm organization to aid our clients in rebuilding self-discipline and self-image. We have very high, but realistic, expectations of the residents which, when met, provide a strong foundation for re-entry into society. |
| Recidivism / Success Rates |
Historically, between 41% and 43% of those who complete t least 45 days at The Haven report being "clean and sober" one year after discharge. Of those who follow through with the suggested aftercare attendance at the University of Utah Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Clinic (UUADAC), between 67% and 70% report being "clean and sober" one year after discharge. This is well above the national average of 33% "clean and sober" at one year. |
| Evaluation and Assessment |
Initially clients are interviewed by our intake coordination prior to screening appointments are made. Potential residents call in and place their name on a waiting list and than are expected to check in daily by phone in order to be scheduled for intake when a bed becomes available. Clients must be five days clean in order to sit for interviews and screening by the staff and residents. An initial confidential evaluation is provided to assess problem areas, the extent of existing drug or alcohol problems, patient strengths and weaknesses, which aid in determining recommendations for further treatment. If determined necessary and the screening qualifications are met the potential resident is accepted into the program. From the very beginning there begins a two-way communication that extends into the rehabilitation phase. The Haven staff and University of Utah Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Clinic (UUADAC) staff combine efforts to for evaluation. Services begin with a complete physical and psychological evaluation by the UUADAC. Nutritional and medical support is immediately recommended when necessary. Physical and psychological complications that are identified at this time are also addressed. Treatment goals, objectives and intervention methods are than determined and agreed upon by both staff and clients in accordance with the patients legal right of determination. |
